Autism: Vitamin C Deficiency Risk Found in Autistic chidren
The Washington Post published an article on the case of an autistic child who came down with debilitating leg pain, bleeding gums, a rash covering his body and the inability to walk. He was 2 ½. They brought in every kind of specialist and preformed 100 different tests which all came back normal. It was about this time that the radiologist noticed bleeding in the leg x-ray which indicated a Vitamin C deficiency. He then brought that up to all these specialists who had missed the clues. After all these sophisticated and expensive tests were done, it turned out he was so low in Vitamin C that it hardly showed up in the blood test. The mother had told the doctors he was a picky eater, but they had not asked her any more questions. The child was so picky; he was not eating enough good food to be normal or well. He turned out to have more nutritional deficiencies as well. His iron was severely low as well. After administering the Vitamin C , he was moving his legs in 7 days, and fully recovered in 4 months. His symptoms were all but gone.
The problem with modern doctors.
The problem is most modern doctors don’t look for vitamin deficiencies in children or adults. We live in a wealthy country where few people starve to death. The reality is that with the ‘normal’ American diet of fast food, empty food, soda, sweets, and junk food, it is common for many adults and children to have vitamin deficiencies. It is also true that even in the U.S., there are kids in Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, and other poor areas where the adults and children eat poorly. Many kids go to school hungry. Homeless mothers are living in cars with the kids. Kids are living in rat and roach infested homes in many areas. Some of the parents are too proud to ask for free school lunches. In some areas, there is no money to help them. So the possibility of vitamin deficiencies should be standardly tested not ignored. Children and adults should be routinely tested for vitamin deficiencies.
Autism along with its many other challenges presents parents with problems getting their children to eat properly. Some of them may have health problems which compromise their ability to eat. Their digestive system may fail to break down foods properly for the absorption of the nutrients.
So if your child is autistic, you need to be aware of this possibility. It would be a good idea to supplement their diet with a quality, complete children’s multi-vitamin. If your child is not eating properly, you need to emphasize that point to the doctor in charge. Be proactive and demand the child be tested for vitamin deficiencies. If they refuse, take him to a holistic doctor that will test him for possible vitamin deficiencies. The symptoms that child was experiencing can also point to other disease conditions, but often such as in this case, they overlook the simple one.
More cases of Vitamin C deficiency are showing up in doctors exams.
More cases of Vitamin C deficiencies are showing up mainly in low income families, the elderly, adults and children with mental health conditions, and in those with autism. Many doctors today have never seen a case of scurvy, so they overlook the symptoms, looking for more serious diseases. They just do not think about the problem. In every case sighted in this article, the doctors overlooked the Vitamin C deficiency and most of the cases involved Autistic children or teens. Most teens these days drink too much caffeine, soda, junk food, and choose poor food choices. That is an American reality leading to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in children. It is a rapidly growing health issue in this country.
Milk does not contain Vitamin C
Almond Milk given to infants and young children is not a complete food and can cause scurvy. See references below. Toddlers given cow’s milk only without adding fruits and vegetables to their diet will also develop scurvy. Cow’s milk does not contain Vitamin C. Some women breast feed through 2 years of age with little additional food.
Processed foods contain little Vitamin C because it is destroyed by heat.
In many countries, there is a rise in scurvy today due to economic problems, starvation, and poor food choices. When there is little money, fruit and vegetables are last on the list for poor families.
Vitamin C Deficiency Symptoms
The symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency include bleeding gums, a petechial rash on the chest, leg pain and weakness, with the child displaying a frog leg position, which is particular to Vitamin C deficiency or Scurvy. The bleeding gums may be one of the first signs in a Vitamin C deficiency.
In conclusion, all children in today's world of junk food, should be monitored for vitamin deficiencies, especially health challenged children and teens.
